The Certificate Program
The Woodrow Wilson School offers a Certificate in Health and Health Policy, sponsored by the Center for Health and Wellbeing. The Certificate trains graduate students for careers in health-related areas in the public and not-for-profit sectors. The program is designed for students with domestic and international health interests and provides both broad training in core topics in health and health policy as well as courses in specialized areas. Woodrow Wilson School MPA and MPP students are eligible for the Certificate. Graduate students in other departments may also make arrangements to complete the Certificate. The certificate is not open to undergraduates.
The Certificate program, started in 2003-04, reflects the growing importance of health as a major public policy issue, and underscores the School's commitment to teaching and research in health and health policy. The Center for Health and Wellbeing, which is part of the Woodrow Wilson School, has 22 faculty associates and hosts a number of visiting scholars and practitioners.
Requirements and Course Offerings
Students who anticipate completing the Certificate in Health and Health Policy should enroll as soon as possible, but no later than the completion of their first HHP course by emailing Judie Miller at jlmiller@princeton.edu. The enrollment is non-binding.
Certificate students are required to complete two core courses and two approved electives on health-related topics. The two core courses, Political Economy of Health Systems and Epidemiology, are offered every year. MPA students may take the core courses in any sequence their first or second years. The core courses may not be taken P/D/F.
The list of approved electives varies from year to year. One of the two elective courses may be a graduate-level course offered by a department outside of the Woodrow Wilson School. Students who wish to count a non-WWS course toward the Certificate should seek advance permission from the Certificate director.
Other departments throughout the University - especially Psychology, Anthropology and History of Science - may offer courses that are relevant to Certificate students. These courses may be counted as an elective with prior permission of the Certificate Director.
