Fellowships in Social Policy

A limited number of fellowships are available every year, primarily (but not exclusively) for graduate students in Economics who have a strong interest in social policy. Applicants must have passed through all of their required courses and examinations in the Economics department and are expected to apply in the middle of their third year of study.

Fellows in Social Policy will be incorporated into a thriving interdisciplinary community of graduate students and faculty interested primarily in inequality in the U.S., Western Europe and to some extent, the developing world. They will benefit from exposure to cutting edge research in the fields of Psychology, Sociology and Politics and, along with the Economics faculty who participate in the teaching program, will be encouraged to contribute the perspective their own field provides in understanding the most pressing problems of wage inequality, differential education attainment, discrimination, among many manifestations of growing inequality.

Fellows in Social Policy will receive full tuition and stipend during their fourth year and will be relieved entirely of teaching responsibilities. For Economics students, who are presently provided only four years of support as a regular matter, the fellowship will extend their package to five years. For students in other departments, the fellowship will relieve them of teaching obligations, but will not extend their support package.

The obligations for these fellowships include the following only: completion of the two term course, "Problems in Social Policy," and the one semester "Workshop in Social Policy." In the course of the two term course and the workshop, fellows will prepare an original research paper suitable for publication in a top journal in their home discipline. Fellows are also required to attend the colloquium series attached to the program, "Dilemmas of Inequality."

Internal applicants are eligible for this fellowship only and applications must be submitted to jdpdir@princeton.edu.
