Carsten received his MSc in political science from University of Aarhus, Denmark, in 2006. His dissertational research focuses on the political processes related to the provision of benefits in-kind in modern welfare states. He has published internationally in Government & Opposition and Journal of European Social Policy, and he has recently been awarded the 2007 Doctoral Researchers Prize for the best paper presented within the Network for European Social Policy Analysis.
